If you live in Northwest Arkansas and you have a retaining wall on your property, there is a decent chance it was built by the homebuilder, not a hardscape contractor. That distinction matters more than most people realize, because builder-grade retaining walls are one of the most common things we get called to replace.
Retaining walls fail for a handful of specific reasons, and almost all of them come down to two things: water and base preparation. If you understand those two factors, you can look at your own wall and have a pretty good idea of whether it is going to hold up or whether you are on borrowed time.
How Retaining Walls Are Supposed to Work
A retaining wall is not just a decorative border. It is holding back soil and water pressure. Every square foot of soil behind that wall weighs somewhere around 100 to 120 pounds, and when that soil gets saturated with rainwater, the weight and pressure increase significantly. The wall has to resist that lateral force, and it has to do it year after year through freeze-thaw cycles, wet seasons, and dry spells.
A wall that is built correctly does two things. It holds the soil back with a structurally sound face, and it manages water behind the wall so hydrostatic pressure never builds up against it. That second part is where most walls fail.
The Number One Reason Walls Fail: No Drainage Behind the Wall
Water is heavier than people think, and when it has nowhere to go, it pushes. If you have a retaining wall with soil packed directly behind it and no drainage system, every rainstorm adds hydrostatic pressure against the back of that wall. Over time, that pressure will move the wall. It might bow outward. It might tilt. It might develop cracks. Eventually, it fails.
A properly built retaining wall has gravel backfill behind it, drainage tile at the base, and weep holes or a drainage outlet so water can escape. The gravel lets water flow down to the drain instead of pressing against the wall. The drain tile carries it away. This is standard practice for any wall over a couple of feet tall, and it is non-negotiable for walls holding back significant soil.
When we replace a failed wall, the first thing we look at behind the old wall is whether there was any drainage at all. Most of the time, there was not. The soil was packed right against the back of the block, and the wall was doing double duty: holding back earth and holding back water. It is only a matter of time before that arrangement gives out.
The Second Reason: Poor Base Preparation
The base of a retaining wall is everything. If the base is not properly excavated, compacted, and leveled, the wall will settle unevenly. When one section settles more than another, the wall loses its structural integrity. You see this as a dip in the wall line, a section that has pulled away, or steps that no longer align.
In NWA, the clay soil makes this particularly tricky. Clay expands when wet and shrinks when dry. A base that is not dug deep enough into stable subsoil will shift with the clay. We excavate below the clay layer, compact a gravel base, and make sure the first course of block is sitting on something that is not going to move.
Builder-grade walls often skip this step entirely. The wall gets built on top of whatever soil was there, maybe with a thin layer of gravel raked over it. It looks fine on closing day. Two years later, it is leaning.
Signs Your Retaining Wall Is in Trouble
You do not need to be an engineer to spot the warning signs. Here is what we tell homeowners to look for:
Bowing or bulging. If the face of the wall is no longer flat and is pushing outward in the middle, the wall is under pressure it was not designed to handle. This is almost always a drainage issue. Water is building up behind the wall and pushing it out.
Leaning at the top. If the top of the wall is tipping forward, the base is failing or the wall was not built with proper batter (the slight backward lean that retaining walls should have). A wall that is leaning is a wall that is going to fail. The question is when, not if.
Cracks in the blocks or mortar. Small cracks can be cosmetic, but cracks that run through blocks or appear in a pattern are a sign of structural stress. If the cracks are getting wider over time, the wall is moving.
Separation at the joints. If blocks are pulling apart from each other or sections of the wall are no longer aligned, the wall has lost its structural connection. This happens when different sections settle at different rates.
Water pooling at the base. If water collects at the foot of the wall after rain and does not drain away, the drainage system is either missing or clogged. That water will eventually find its way behind the wall and add pressure.
Erosion at the ends. If soil is washing out from around the ends of the wall, water is getting behind or around it. This undermines the base and will eventually compromise the whole structure.
What to Do If Your Wall Is Showing Signs
If you are seeing one or more of these signs, the wall is not going to fix itself. The question is whether it can be repaired or whether it needs to be replaced, and that depends on what is causing the failure and how far along it is.
A wall that is bowing because of a drainage issue can sometimes be saved by installing drainage behind it, if the wall has not moved too far. A wall that is leaning because the base failed usually needs to come out and be rebuilt correctly. A wall with cracked blocks and separated joints is usually past repair.
The honest answer is that most failed retaining walls in NWA need to be replaced, because the original construction did not include the things that make a wall last: proper excavation, proper base compaction, gravel backfill, and drainage tile. Repairing a wall that was never built right in the first place is usually throwing good money after bad.
