Paver Patio vs. Concrete: Which Holds Up Better in NWA Clay Soil?

If you are deciding between a paver patio and a poured concrete patio for your NWA home, the climate and soil here should factor heavily into that decision. What works in a place with stable, sandy soil and mild winters is not the same thing that works in a region with clay soil, heavy spring rain, and freeze-thaw cycles.

We install both, but we install a lot more paver patios than concrete ones, and the reasons for that are specific to Northwest Arkansas conditions. Here is the honest comparison.

How Clay Soil Changes the Math

NWA soil is clay-heavy. Clay expands when it absorbs water and shrinks when it dries out. That means the ground under your patio is constantly moving, even if the movement is small. Over a year of wet springs and dry summers, that movement adds up.

Poured concrete is rigid. It does not flex. When the soil underneath it shifts, the concrete either cracks or heaves. You have probably seen concrete patios, driveways, or sidewalks in NWA with cracks running through them or sections that have lifted up. That is clay soil doing what it does.

Paver patios are different. The pavers themselves are individual units, and they sit in a bed of sand over a compacted gravel base. That assembly has some flex to it. When the soil shifts slightly, the pavers can move with it instead of cracking. If a paver does settle or shift, you can lift it, fix the base underneath, and put it back. You cannot do that with concrete.

Crack Repair vs. Paver Repair

This is where the long-term cost difference becomes clear. A cracked concrete patio is a permanent problem. You can patch the crack, but the patch is visible and the crack will often reopen because the underlying soil movement has not stopped. The only real fix is tearing out the concrete and repouring, which means you are paying for the whole patio again.

A paver patio that settles or shifts is repairable. We lift the affected pavers, add or recompact base material, level the sand, and reset the pavers. The repair is invisible when it is done, and it costs a fraction of what a concrete tear-out and repour would cost. If you are planning to stay in your home for more than five years, this difference matters.

Drainage and Water Management

How water moves across and through your patio surface is the other big consideration. Poured concrete is a solid, impermeable surface. Water runs off it, which means you need to plan where that water goes. If your patio slopes toward your house or toward a low spot in the yard, you have created a drainage problem.

Paver patios have slight joints between the pavers that allow some water to pass through into the base. This is not full permeability, but it does reduce surface runoff. More importantly, a paver patio is installed with a designed slope, usually a quarter inch per foot, to direct water where you want it to go. Because the surface is made of individual units, adjusting the slope during installation is straightforward.

With concrete, the slope is set when the concrete is poured. If it is wrong, you live with it or you tear it out.

Freeze-Thaw and NWA Winters

Northwest Arkansas gets freeze-thaw cycles through the winter. Water gets into small cracks or joints, freezes, expands, and widens those cracks. Over a few winters, small cracks in concrete become big cracks.

Paver patios handle freeze-thaw better because the joints between pavers give the system room to accommodate slight movement. The polymeric sand we use in the joints is designed to stay flexible enough to handle this without cracking. Concrete has no such flexibility.

When Concrete Makes Sense

This is not an anti-concrete article. Concrete has its place. If you need a large, flat surface for a specific purpose like a basketball pad or a heavy equipment pad, poured concrete is the right choice. It is also the more cost-effective option for very large areas where the cost of pavers would be prohibitive.

But for a residential patio where you want something that looks good, holds up to NWA conditions, and can be repaired without starting over, pavers are the better long-term investment.

Cost Comparison

Poured concrete is cheaper upfront. A basic concrete patio will typically run less per square foot than a paver patio. That is the main reason people choose it.

Paver patios cost more upfront but have lower lifetime costs because they do not need to be torn out and replaced when they shift or crack. Over ten or fifteen years, the paver patio that needed a few pavers reset is significantly cheaper than the concrete patio that had to be torn out and repoured.

If you are planning to sell the home within a couple of years, concrete might make sense from a cost perspective. If you are planning to stay, pavers are the better financial decision.
