How to Choose a Hardscaping Contractor in Northwest Arkansas (Without Getting Burned)

If you are looking for a hardscape contractor in Northwest Arkansas, you have options. There are plenty of companies that will give you a quote for a retaining wall, a patio, or a drainage project. The problem is that not all of them build to the same standard, and the difference usually does not show up until a couple of years after the work is done.

We get called regularly to replace walls and patios that other contractors installed. The failures are almost always the same: no drainage behind the wall, insufficient base preparation, or materials that were not right for the application. The homeowner paid for a project that should have lasted decades, and they are paying for it again five years later.

Here is what we tell homeowners to ask before they hire anyone for outdoor work in NWA.

Ask About Drainage Specifically

This is the single most important question you can ask. If you are getting a retaining wall built, ask the contractor what they do for drainage behind the wall. If the answer is vague or they say it is not necessary, that is a red flag.

A proper retaining wall has gravel backfill behind it, drainage tile at the base, and an outlet for water to escape. Without that, water builds up behind the wall and pushes it outward. It is not a question of if the wall will have problems, it is a question of when.

For patios, ask about the base. How deep do they excavate? What material do they use for the base? How do they compact it? A patio built on a thin layer of sand over clay soil will settle and shift within a few years. A patio built on a properly excavated and compacted gravel base will stay level for decades.

Find Out Who Actually Does the Work

This is something most homeowners do not think to ask, and it is where a lot of the problems start. Some companies sell the project, collect the deposit, and then send a subcontracted crew to do the installation. The person who gave you the quote and the person building your wall are not the same person. If something goes wrong, the salesperson points at the crew, the crew points at the salesperson, and you are stuck in the middle.

Ask directly: who will be on-site during my project? Is it the owner, a foreman, or a subcontracted crew? Will the person who gave me the quote be available during the project if I have questions?

Get a Written Quote With Specifics

A quote that says "retaining wall, $8,000" tells you nothing. You need a written quote that specifies the scope of work: the height and length of the wall, the type of block being used, the depth of excavation, the drainage system being installed, and the warranty or guarantee.

Without specifics, you cannot compare quotes accurately. One contractor might be quoting a wall with proper drainage and a proper base. Another might be quoting a wall without either. The second quote will be cheaper, and it will look like a better deal until the wall starts failing.

Ask for the details in writing. If a contractor will not put the specifics in the quote, that tells you something about how they operate.

Ask About Local Experience

NWA soil is not like soil in other parts of the country. The clay content, the rock, the freeze-thaw cycles, and the spring rainfall all create conditions that require specific knowledge. A contractor who moved here from somewhere with sandy soil and mild winters is going to make assumptions that do not hold up in NWA.

Ask how long they have been working in Northwest Arkansas. Ask what neighborhoods they have worked in. Ask about specific challenges they have encountered with NWA soil and how they handled them. You are not interrogating them; you are making sure they actually know what they are dealing with on your property.

Check Whether They Carry Insurance

This is basic, but you would be surprised how many homeowners skip it. If a contractor damages your property, injures themselves on your site, or causes a problem that affects a neighbor's property, you need to know that there is insurance in place to cover it.

Ask for proof of insurance. A legitimate contractor will have it ready to share. If they do not, or if they get defensive about the question, move on.

Beware of Quotes That Are Too Low

The cheapest quote is rarely the best deal. In hardscaping, a low quote usually means something is being left out. The drainage is being skipped. The base is being underbuilt. The material is being downgraded. Or the contractor does not have insurance and is operating on cash deals with no warranty.

You are not just paying for materials and labor. You are paying for the knowledge to do it right, the insurance to protect you if something goes wrong, and the accountability of someone who will still be around in five years if the wall starts leaning.

When you compare quotes, compare what is actually included, not just the bottom line. A quote that is 30 percent cheaper than the others is almost certainly cutting something that matters.

Talk to Past Customers

Any contractor can show you photos of finished projects. Finished photos do not tell you what the project looks like three years later. Ask for references, and actually call them. Ask the past customer if the project has held up. Ask if the contractor was responsive during the project. Ask if there were any issues and how they were handled.

A contractor who does good work will be happy to put you in touch with past customers. A contractor who does not will find a reason to avoid it.
